This Women’s Month, Sloom is proud to shine a light on the incredible work of Sisters Incorporated, a safe haven for women and children who have experienced domestic violence, abuse, and trauma.
Through our Dream On initiative, we’ll be donating 100% of proceeds to Sisters Incorporated, supporting their mission of offering shelter, therapy, and hope to survivors who need it most.
On 19 August, members of the Sloom team, together with friends of the brand and influential partners, visited Sisters Incorporated to experience first-hand the impact of the organisation’s work.
“What struck me most is the love and care that lives within those walls,” says Susan Kemp of Sloom. “From the staff to the women and children, you can feel that this is more than a shelter - it’s a home filled with care, dignity, and compassion. The work being done there is changing lives, one safe night of rest at a time.”
A Place of Safety and Healing
For 66 years, Sisters Incorporated has been a lifeline in Cape Town. What started as a refuge for single mothers has grown into a full-circle care facility that welcomes women and their children from all walks of life.
Here, families are not only given a safe place to sleep but also the support and skills to rebuild their lives. The organisation offers trauma-informed care, counselling, education, and life skills training - all delivered with care and respect.
“At Sisters Incorporated, we believe in keeping mothers and children together,” shares Dalene Roberts, Manager of the organisation. “They’ve already lost so much. We give them a safe space where they can heal side-by-side, where safety, stability, and sleep are part of the recovery journey.”
Why Sleep Matters in Recovery
Many of us take something as simple as a bed for granted. But for the women who arrive at Sisters Incorporated, a bed of their own is often the very first step in reclaiming a sense of safety.
“Having a safe bed to sleep in is not the norm for many of the women who come through our doors,” says Roberts. “Some have never had a bed to call their own. Being able to provide that sense of comfort and security is something I will never take for granted.”
Creating that safe haven comes at a cost of R10,000 per person, per month. Most women and children stay for three months, during which time they receive holistic care and the tools they need to take the next step towards independence.
Why Sloom Chose to Support
For Sloom, a company rooted in the science of sleep, supporting Sisters Incorporated felt like a natural fit.
“A safe, warm bed is more than just a piece of furniture; it’s the beginning of feeling human again,” says Rudo Kemp, Founder of Sloom. “Sleep and recovery are closely linked. Without rest, the body and mind struggle to heal. We believe in the power of rest, and we’re honoured to support an organisation that gives women and children the chance to truly recover.”
